QUE: Briefly explain the key features and various significance of NISAR satellite.

December 19, 2025

NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite is a landmark joint Earth-observation mission between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the USA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) of India. Scheduled for launch on July 30, 2025 by ISRO’s GSLV-F16 from Sriharikota, NISAR is set to revolutionize our understanding of Earth’s dynamic processes, making it a vital scientific and strategic asset.

  • Key features of NISAR satellite:

• Joint mission: Emphasis is on collaboration between NASA (providing L-band SAR) and ISRO (providing S-band SAR, spacecraft bus and launch vehicle).

• Dual-frequency SAR: L-band can penetrate vegetation, while S-band provides supplementary data. This allows for more extensive observation.

• All-weather and day-night capability: SAR can penetrate clouds and operate independently of sunlight, ensuring continuous data collection.

• High-resolution imaging: It has the ability to provide very high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface.

• Repeated observations (12-day cycle): Frequent repetitions are important to monitor changes over time.

• Global coverage: NISAR will observe almost all land and ice surfaces on Earth.

  • Importance of NISAR satellite:
  • Environmental monitoring

• Monitors deforestation, wetlands, glaciers and groundwater depletion.

• Provides support for carbon stock estimation to mitigate climate change.

  • Agriculture and resource management

• Helps monitor soil moisture, crop health and irrigation needs

• Accuracy is useful for agriculture and drought assessment.

  • Disaster Management

• Will provide real-time data for earthquakes, floods, landslides and cyclones.

• Enables early warning systems and post-disaster damage assessment.

  • Strategic and scientific significance

• Enhances India’s remote sensing capabilities.

• Supports studies of tectonic plate motion and sea level rise.

• Data is shared globally, enhancing India’s soft power.

  • Strengthens global collaboration

• Strengthens India-US ties in science and technology.

• Sets a precedent for international joint missions.

Thus, NISAR is poised to become a landmark in Earth observation, providing important insights about our changing planet. Its use in climate resilience, agriculture and disaster management will benefit not only India, but also the global scientific community.
