QUE: The Indian diaspora is one of the most influential diasporas in the world. Discuss the various dimensions of its importance for India and the challenges related to its integration with the motherland.

December 30, 2025

The Indian diaspora is a quite heterogeneous group and includes people from different economic and social classes, who have migrated from India and settled abroad. According to the data of the year 2020, about 18 million Indian citizens live abroad. The Indian diaspora plays a significant role in the political, social and economic development of India and the world.

  • Some important aspects in this perspective:

→The Indian diaspora can act as a bridge between India and its host countries by promoting mutual understanding and cooperation. They can also advocate for India’s national interests and support India’s foreign policy objectives.

→The Indian diaspora is a major source of foreign exchange for India, remitting about US$108 billion in 2022, which was 3% of India’s gross domestic product (GDP). Remittances help boost domestic consumption, investment and social welfare in India.

→The Indian diaspora has contributed to the advancement of science, technology and innovation in India and abroad. Many NRIs have excelled in fields such as IT, engineering, medicine and biotechnology, creating new products and services that benefit society.

→The Indian diaspora has helped spread Indian culture and values across the world, helping to enhance India’s soft power and global image.

→The Indian diaspora is a valuable asset of the country and a source of pride for all Indians.

  • Some challenges in this perspective:

As the Indian diaspora may become alienated from their cultural roots over time, they may face challenges in maintaining strong ties with India in the future.

→Some members of the Indian diaspora may even lose touch or connection with their ancestral roots due to assimilation of the culture of their host countries.

→The diversity among the Indian diaspora often gives rise to different political views and affiliations, which can sometimes create divisions and challenges in coordinating efforts to promote Indian interests.
→Members of the Indian diaspora often have dual loyalties to both dependent countries and India. Balancing such loyalties can be challenging, especially in situations where the interests of the two countries are divergent.

→Some countries have strict immigration and visa policies, which make it difficult for members of the diaspora to visit or invest in India. These legal and policy hurdles can hinder their connection with the motherland.

Realizing the potential of the Indian diaspora to be a valuable asset to India, the government has initiated various policies such as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, PIO, OIC, Know India Programme, e-Migrate Project, scholarship programmes for migrant children, etc. Thus, the international image of the nation can be improved through a strong Indian diaspora.
