Que : What is a cyclone? Discuss the ideal conditions for the formation of a tropical cyclone and give information about the main areas of this cyclone.

January 9, 2026
  •  What is a cyclone?
  •  The air in the earth’s atmosphere keeps moving regularly and in a specific direction, due to which, there is a disturbance in the air of the atmosphere and such an unstable air cycle in which there is low pressure in the center and high pressure outside is called a cyclone. Due to which the air moves from the outside to the inside and a cyclone is formed.
  •  When two air currents with different temperatures come face to face, instead of mixing with each other, they collide. The air pressure suddenly decreases near their meeting point. The formation of a cyclone begins in this area.
  •  There is low pressure in the center of the cyclone and the pressure increases as it moves away from the center. Due to the rotation of the Earth, the winds rush towards the low pressure in the middle and take a detour and rise above the ground surface.
  •  Air storms affect only a limited period of time and a limited area. These storms are known as cyclones, anticyclones and thunderstorms.
  • Cyclones are round, oval or ‘V’ shaped.
  •  Due to the rotation of the Earth, its direction is counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere.
  •  Tropical cyclones
  •  Cyclones that originate and develop in the oceans of the tropical zone are called tropical cyclones.
  •  If this cyclone crosses the sea coast and reaches the land. That place is called the cyclone landfall area. In India, such cyclones are also known as cyclones.
  •  Trade winds of both hemispheres meet near the equator. It is called the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
  •  This convergence zone is formed in the summer due to the warming of the ocean surface in the northern hemisphere and the formation of high air pressure around it due to the moisture in the surrounding atmosphere.
  •  Due to the Coriolis force, the air moves upwards in a circular path, due to which a tropical cyclone is formed.
  •  The wind direction in this cyclone is counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere due to the Coriolis force.
  • Tropical cyclones usually form only in summer.
  •  Conditions Required for Tropical Cyclone
  •  A large ocean surface with a temperature above 27° C.
  •  There should be development of low pressure center and convergence and ascension of air (moving upwards) at sea level.
  •  Warm and humid air should be moving upwards continuously. Because, energy is supplied to the cyclone from latent heat in the condensation process.
  • The presence of Coriolis force should be inevitable to give circular motion to latent heat air
  • Major Region of Tropical Cyclone
  •  Cyclones coming from June to October in Mexico and Caribbean Sea are called Hurricane.
  •  Cyclones coming from July to October in China Sea are called Typhoon which affects Philippines, China and Japan.
  •  In Indian Ocean it is called Cyclone which affects India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Madagascar and north coast of Australia.
  •  In Australia, these cyclones are called Willy-Willy.
