April 12, 2026

There are various institutions and laws at the international, regional and national levels for the protection of human rights. These institutions play a vital role in promoting, monitoring and ensuring respect for and fulfilment of human rights. Here are some major examples.

  • United Nations (UN):

→ The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948, serves as the foundational document for the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.

→ The UN also has various specialized agencies, such as the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which work for the protection and promotion of human rights globally.

 International Human Rights Treaties:

→ Treaties such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) establish the responsibilities of countries in the protection and promotion of specific human rights.

  • Regional Human Rights Institutions :

→ Various regional institutions have established mechanisms to protect human rights in their respective regions. For example, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) provide a framework for the protection of human rights in Europe.

→ Similarly, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) oversee the promotion and protection of human rights in the Americas and Africa, respectively.

  • National Human Rights Commissions :

→ Many countries (including India) have established a National Human Rights Commission or Ombudsman institution. These institutions are responsible for monitoring the human rights situation within the country, investigating complaints, and advocating for the protection and promotion of human rights at the national level.

→ Which play a key role in the protection of human rights in specific jurisdictions.

  • Domestic Law and Acts:

→ Governments enact domestic laws and take action to protect and promote human rights within their jurisdiction.

→ This includes constitutional provisions, anti-discrimination laws, labor laws, and other laws aimed at protecting the rights and freedoms of individuals.

→ National law helps provide a legal framework for the protection of human rights and enables the implementation of international human rights standards at the domestic level.

  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs):

→ NGOs play an important role in advocating for human rights, monitoring human rights situations, and providing assistance to individuals and communities affected by human rights violations.

They raise awareness, conduct research, and collaborate with governments and international organizations to promote human rights and hold violators accountable.
