Que : – Discuss the environmental concerns associated with diesel vehicles and assess the effectiveness of policy initiatives to address these concerns. What further steps should be taken to reduce the environmental impact of diesel vehicles in India?

January 7, 2026

Fossil fuel-based vehicles are a major source of environmental problems such as air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Air pollution due to exhaust fumes from these vehicles can cause respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems and premature death. It also contributes to global warming and climate change, which can have serious impacts on ecosystems, biodiversity and human well-being.

  •  Some of the policy initiatives taken by the government in this regard are:
  •  National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) 2020, which aims to achieve sales of 6-7 million hybrid and electric vehicles by the year 2020.
  •  National Biofuel Policy, which includes blending of ethanol and biodiesel with petrol and diesel respectively to reduce emissions along with dependence on fossil fuels.
  •  Launch of Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA) under India’s G20 Presidency, which aims to facilitate cooperation among countries in this regard and accelerate the use of sustainable biofuels.
  •  FAME scheme which includes demand-supply based incentives and supporting charging infrastructure for EVs (Electric Vehicles).
  •  However, to achieve rapid and comprehensive transformation in the EVs sector in India, certain challenges need to be addressed such as;
  •  Ensuring adequate and affordable financing options for buyers and manufacturers of EVs. Ensuring availability and access to subsidies, taxes, benefits and insurance schemes along with low cost credit for buyers and manufacturers.
  • Harmonize technical standards and regulations for charging infrastructure across states and territories; Promote the use of renewable energy sources for charging and encourage the establishment of private charging facilities
  •  Provide adequate domestic manufacturing capacity and supply chain for EVs components such as batteries, motors and power electronics.
  •  Upgrade domestic manufacturing capacity and supply chain of EVs sector by supporting innovation, research, skill development, quality control and technology transfer; Reduce dependence on import of critical raw materials such as lithium, cobalt and nickel and promote recycling and reuse of batteries.
  • Build consumer awareness and trust regarding performance, reliability and safety of EVs.
  • Promote coordination and integration among various stakeholders such as Central and State Governments, industry associations, civil society organizations, academia and media.
  • Strengthening coordination and integration among various stakeholders by creating a platform for dialogue, consultation, collaboration, feedback, monitoring, evaluation, etc.

                        By taking these steps, India can accelerate growth in the EVs sector and reduce the negative environmental impact caused by fossil fuel-based vehicles. This will not only help India achieve its national goals of energy security, economic growth and social welfare, but will also contribute to fulfilling environmental commitments.
