The Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSPs), contained in Part IV (Articles 36–51) of the Indian Constitution, are non-justiciable principles that guide the State in establishing a social, economic, and political democracy. Inspired largely by the Irish Constitution, they embody the vision of a welfare state and are fundamental to the governance of the country.

• Role of DPSPs in Governance

• Promoting Social Justice: DPSPs seek to reduce inequalities in income, status, and opportunities through affirmative state action.

• Economic Welfare: They encourage equitable distribution of resources, prevention of concentration of wealth, and protection of workers through provisions such as equal pay for equal work and humane working conditions.

• Human Development: They guide the State in ensuring free and compulsory education, improving nutrition, public health, and raising the standard of living.

• Environmental Protection: Through Article 48A, DPSPs direct the State to protect and improve the environment and safeguard forests and wildlife.

• Strengthening Democracy: They promote decentralization through Panchayati Raj institutions and encourage citizen participation in governance.

• Legal and Administrative Reforms: DPSPs support the establishment of a Uniform Civil Code, separation of the judiciary from the executive, and promotion of international peace.

The Supreme Court has highlighted the complementary relationship between Fundamental Rights and DPSPs in landmark cases such as Kesavananda Bharati v. State of Kerala and Minerva Mills Ltd. v. Union of India, holding that both together constitute the basic philosophy of the Constitution.

Although DPSPs are not legally enforceable, they have significantly influenced constitutional amendments, legislation, and public policies. Schemes relating to education, rural employment, food security, and environmental conservation reflect their implementation.
