The strength of India-UAE relations was mentioned by the Prime Minister of India at the recently held Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in Gujarat.

  • Historical Perspective of India-UAE Relations:

India UAE CEPA: This agreement, which came into effect from May 1, 2022, has reduced tariffs on goods exported from India to the UAE by 80% and expanded the reach of duty-free items to 90%. The trade in crude oil is expected to touch $50 billion in 2022-23 alone.

IMEC: The UAE is a very important partner for the India-Central East Europe Economic Corridor as an alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

I2U2 Group: This grouping of India, UAE, Israel, US encourages technical and private sector cooperation in areas such as water, energy, transport.

Rupee Dirham Agreement: The Reserve Bank of India and the Central Bank of UAE have established a framework to reduce dependence on the US dollar in domestic financial transactions.

Cultural Exchanges: The UAE’s religious tolerance is noteworthy, as the first temple (Swaminarayan) being built in Abu Dhabi.

Importance of India-UAE relations:

→ Strategic Importance: In the context of the ongoing disputes in the Middle East, the India-UAE alliance ensures the security of both nations by jointly fighting terrorism and piracy. India is the sixth largest crude oil importer of the UAE and plays a key role in India’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve Program, ensuring energy security.

→ Political Importance: The UAE supports India in various international platforms, which are important for multi-dimensional reforms. Apart from this, these relations are also important to balance the presence of China in the region. Strong relations with the UAE are essential for India’s membership in regional groups like GCC and OIC etc. and for free trade agreements.

→ Economic Importance: The UAE is a major source of foreign money in the form of remittances for India. With investments in various sectors, the UAE is the third largest trading partner of India. In addition, access to African markets is also possible through the UAE.

→ Cultural Importance: The relations between the two countries are extremely important for protecting the interests of the Indian diaspora residing in the UAE from India. Apart from this, it also increases India’s soft power in the Middle East region.

  • Challenges facing India-UAE relations:

→ Trade barriers: UAE’s non-tariff barriers such as SPS measures, TBT etc. affect exports from India, especially poultry and processed food items.

→ Chinese Economic Impact: China’s “Cheque Book Diplomacy” is driving Indian businesses in the UAE back.

→ Caravan Labor System: Bad environment for imported laborers, passport impoundment, labor delays, etc. are burning issues.

→ Financial Assistance to Pakistan: Significant financial assistance to Pakistan is a matter of concern for India.

→ Iran-Arab Dispute: Maintaining a balance between UAE and Iran relations is a diplomatic challenge in this time of dispute.

      For India’s strong presence on the international stage, it is very important to further improve relations with the UAE in various dimensions. Such as transparency in non-tariff barriers for easy trade, high-level dialogue to resolve important defense and political issues, increasing economic cooperation, making collective efforts in new technology and innovation, giving more emphasis on health facilities and research.
