Que: How does Indian society maintain the continuity of traditional social values? Describe the changes that occur in it

December 6, 2025

Indian society works in many ways to maintain the continuity of traditional social values, including cultural, religious and social traditions. These values include elements such as joint family, respect, religion, and social morality.

  • Continuity of social values

• Joint family system: The joint family is an important institution in Indian society, which transfers values, traditions and customs between generations. Children are given moral and cultural education by grandparents and parents. For example, families come together during festivals such as Diwali, Holi, and Raksha Bandhan, which strengthens social bonds.

• Religious and cultural practices: Religion is the mainstay of traditional values in India. The traditions of Hindu, Islam, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist and Christian religions maintain the values of morality, duty and service in the society. Festivals, religious rituals (such as puja, namaz, gurudwara-seva) and pilgrimages (such as kumbh mela, hajj pilgrimage) keep people connected to traditions.

• Education and social customs: The guru-shishya tradition is still seen to some extent in education, which teaches respect and moral values. Social values are transmitted through traditional practices like marriage, naming and other rituals.

• Literature and art: Texts like ‘Ramayana’, ‘Mahabharata’, ‘Bhagavad Gita’ and folk tales preserve moral values. Dance, music, and folk arts (such as Garba, Bhangra, Kathak) keep cultural traditions alive.

  • Changes in Traditional Values

• Due to the influence of modernity, globalization and technology, traditional values in Indian society are also changing:

• From joint family to single family: Urbanization and economic independence have led to a shift in many young people towards single families. This is weakening the traditional joint family system, especially in cities. For example, young people migrate to cities for jobs, which has led to a decrease in the proportion of living with the elders of the family.

• Changes in marriage and relationships: Traditional arranged marriages are still prevalent, but love marriages and inter-caste/inter-religious marriages have increased. Women’s independence and education have led to an increase in the age of marriage and questions have been raised about practices like dowry.

• Modernity in religious values: The younger generation sees religion from a more personal and spiritual perspective, which has led to a decrease in the observance of traditional religious rituals. For example, online worship, virtual religious ceremonies and the use of religious apps have increased.

• Impact of Globalization: The influence of Western culture, social media and global entertainment has brought about changes in the clothing, lifestyle and mindset of the youth. For example, Western clothing like jeans and T-shirts have become popular among urban youth instead of traditional Indian attire.

• Gender Equality: Changes are taking place in the traditional patriarchal society. Women have increased their access to education, employment and decision-making freedom, which is challenging traditional gender roles.

• Impact of Technology: The Internet and social media have given a new dimension to traditional values. For example, online matrimonial sites have given a modern form to arranged marriages. Youth are questioning traditional values and adopting new ideas through social media.

Thus, Indian society maintains traditional values through family, religion and cultural practices; but these values are undergoing significant changes due to the influence of modernity, education and globalization. These changes, on the one hand, give a new form to traditions, while on the other hand, make the society more inclusive and progressive. Maintaining a balance between tradition and modernity in this transformation is a major challenge for Indian society.
