Recently, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of the Wadhawan Port project worth about ₹76,000 crore in Palghar, Maharashtra. When completed, it is expected to be among the top 10 ports in the world. Wadhawan Port will have a handling capacity of 23.2 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). Wadhawan Port will be a deep draft port with a draft of about 20 metres, enabling it to handle Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). The port will be important for India’s maritime ambitions and global trade expansion.

• Importance of Wadhawan Port for India :

1. Strategic location:

• Wadhawan Port is located on the west coast of India, near Mumbai, which will provide connectivity to international shipping routes.

2. Increase cargo capacity:

• Currently, major ports in India such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Mundra are operating at their full capacity. Wadhawan Port will be able to handle larger ships and more cargo.

9. Located near Dahanu city in Palghar district, the port will be one of the largest deep-water ports in India and will provide direct connectivity to international shipping routes, as well as reduce transit time and costs.
