Recently, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of the Wadhawan Port project worth about ₹76,000 crore in Palghar, Maharashtra. When completed, it is expected to be among the top 10 ports in the world. Wadhawan Port will have a handling capacity of 23.2 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). Wadhawan Port will be a deep draft port with a draft of about 20 metres, enabling it to handle Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). The port will be important for India’s maritime ambitions and global trade expansion.

  • Importance of Wadhawan Port for India :

  • Wadhawan Port is located on the west coast of India, near Mumbai, which will provide connectivity to international shipping routes.

  • Currently, major ports in India such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Mundra are operating at their full capacity. Wadhawan Port will be able to handle larger ships and more cargo.

  • With the capacity to handle ULCVs, Wadhawan Port will reduce per-unit shipping costs and make Indian exports more competitive.

  • This port will provide direct access to global shipping lines, making India an important transshipment hub for the region. It will give India an important place in the global supply chain.

  • Wadhawan Port will potentially act as a gateway for the future International North-South Transportation Corridor (INSTC) and India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC).
  1. The aim of the Wadhawan Port is to create a world-class maritime gateway, capable of handling large container ships and accommodating ultra-large cargo ships, boosting the country’s trade and economic development.
