QUE. Women novelists of Gujarat have successfully portrayed the psychology of female heroines in their novels – Discuss.

June 25, 2026

Women-centric works are being created in literature found in all parts of the world and in all languages, but when women writers portray the psychological state of women in their own works in a clear manner, it is very emotional.

  • Women novelists of Gujarat and the portrayal of the psychoanalysis of female heroines in their novels:
  • Among the feminist women writers of Gujarat, Dhirubhen Patel, Kundanika Kapadia, Himanshi Shelat, Varsha Adalja, Ila Pathak, Ila Arab Mehta, • Bhatt etc. can be considered excellent creators. In recent times, the name of Kajal Ojha Vaidya can also be added. In her novels, women’s pain and female sensitivity are also revealed and she portrays the psychoanalysis of women.
  • Varsha Adalja: Women’s sensibilities are reflected in the works of Varsha Adalja. Her notable novels are ‘Treijo Kinare’, ‘Khari Padela Tohuko’, ‘Gantha Chutyaani Vela’ etc.
  • The novel ‘Treijo Kinaro’ is a story of women’s sensibilities, personal problems, suffering and self-reliance. The main character of this novel is ‘Ashumi’. Her character shows the condition of a woman in a patriarchal society.
  • In this novel, Ashumi is shown as a woman who resists the patriarchal society along with being an innocent woman. In which the mood of a woman is shown in her resistance to the patriarchal customs of the society.
  • Dhirubhen Patel: The world of women also emerges in Dhirubhen Patel’s novels. Her novels are mostly seen as women-centric. In her novels, Vadavanal, Shimla Naan Phool, Vavantolmeh touches on the feelings of women in a more personal way.
  • His novel Vavantol is about a woman who is imprisoned for committing a murder. This story, which has a psychological approach, focuses on the mental anguish of a woman.
  • Similarly, Vavantol also has a story covering the life and death of a character named ‘Taya’. It is the story of an orphan Taya who enters a happy family.
  • Kajal Ojha Vaidya: In Kajal Ojha Vaidya’s novel ‘Draupadi’, the cry of pain of a woman who sets out to find herself is seen. Although the main character of this novel is Draupadi of the Mahabharata, the entire novel is written by ‘I’.
  • In which the woman who says ‘I’ is not just Draupadi of Mahabharata, but the story of a woman born in any era. Who sets out to find herself, and the problems and pains she experiences at that time are presented in this novel.
  • Kundanika Kapadia: Kundanika Kapadia is also such a feminist creator, in whose novels Before Dawn, Aganpipasa, Prem Na Aasun and Saat Paad Akasham, etc., female sensitivity emerges.
  • ‘Seven Steps in the Sky’ is a novel depicting the sorrows of women’s lives with reference to the delicate problems of the relationship between a man and a woman.
  • It is a story of the struggle between a woman’s existence and her identity. This story reflects the mentality of the society that women have always been of second rank and that women are considered only as a tool to serve their husbands and give birth to sons to further the lineage.

Thus, Gujarati women novelists have captured the mundane lives of women, their struggles and their moods on paper in their novels.
